Qatar Toastmasters Club was chartered on November 13, 1997 with
twenty five members from diverse communities.
Doha Toastmasters took the initiative to
sponsor our Club. Mr. Ronny Mendonca and
Mr. George Thomas were designated as the
Club sponsors.
During
the early years, the club struggled to obtain
the minimum membership of twenty, which
is required in order to obtain a Charter.
As a result of the commitment and dedication
of several core members especially members
like Ms. Judith Britten, Mr. George Thomas
and Mr. Frank Banaynal the club obtained
its Charter on November 13, 1997. Upon chartering
the club, the club was opened to all and
brought a larger, more diverse membership.
Our club had members from all walks of life,
who had the flair to develop their communication
and leadership skills and progress in life.
The
first meeting place was made available at
the Hotel Sofitel now Mercure Grand. This
location was possible, thanks to the efforts
of Mr. George Thomas. Later due to lack
of ample parking place, the location
was moved to the Falcon Club . Falcon Club belongs
to Qatar Petroleum and there
were technical difficulties in continuing
to hold our meetings in this place. On July 1, 2001
the meeting place was shifted to the Doha
Marriott Gulf Hotel. We again moved, to
a new location at the Movenpick Hotel at the
Corniche on July 1, 2002. Currently our
meetings are held at Aalishan Hall, Aalishan Restaurant.
Since
its inceptions each year the club has won the
President's Distinguished Club Award many
times. Our club is the pioneer
in holding various community programs in
Qatar. Since 1997 we conduct annually the
Speech Craft Program, Youth Leadership Program,
Qatar Open Youth Public Speaking Championship. In the past
few years, we have conducted a program for
the children between the age group of 10 -12
years. The name was aptly chosen as the
"Stand Up and Speak" program.
On
the occasion of 10th Anniversary of Qatar
Toastmasters Club - our club website was
launched on 15th February 2007 with great fanfare in the Ashoka hall, Indian Cultural
Centre, Doha by our webmaster TM. Rajesh
Nair (Raj Nair). We are confident that our website
will prove to be a very useful medium
to promote and create awareness about
the activities of Qatar Toastmasters &
will be helpful to the people who wish to
join the club.
Undaunted,
our members and officers have committed
to continuing our goal of self-improvement
in communication and preserving our club
name as "Qatar Toastmasters Club".
