FAQ
Why do people join Toastmasters? How soon will I be an expert?
People join Toastmasters in order to:
Practice public speaking and enhance their presentation skills
Develop the skills to persuade and convince others
Improve their self-confidence before a group of people
Learn to think quickly and clearly under pressure
Listen effectively and critically
Train to become a good leader
People progress at their own pace. Some move faster than others. The more active you are within the club, the faster you will develop and become an expert.
As you proceed, you will find that situations that once terrified you now holds no fears for you.
What happens at a meeting and what do I learn?
In a Toastmasters Club you will learn:
How to give an impromptu speech
How to give a prepared speech
How to evaluate what you hear
How to introduce speakers
How to be a more effective leader of people
How to Chair and run meetings
Everybody gets involved in various roles and you get better by participating as much as possible. Each week, an agenda is prepared beforehand. Each meeting lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes and has 3 sessions, Project Speeches, Table topics & Evaluation Session.
As you will see, speaking skills, evaluations skills, and leadership (running a meeting) skills are practiced at every meeting.
Your objective as a member should be to participate in one of the 13-17 roles available. You want to practice more than just during Table Topics!
How do I learn these skills?
When you join Toastmasters, you will receive two manuals, which support your journey in different ways:
Competent Communicator manual – 10 project speeches which refine different aspects of your speaking
Competent Leadership manual – leadership roles both inside and outside the meeting. The roles vary in levels of responsibility, from taking a small role to help the smooth running of a meeting, to chairing a committee to organise a speech craft in your local area
Your efforts will be evaluated by fellow Club members who will support you on the way. As you gain proficiency, you will evaluate other members.
